Value-added functions extend the possibilities offered by ESP®

The fundamental task of ESP® is to prevent skidding. The possibilities offered by the ESP® product family, however, go far beyond this capability. The fact that the buildup of braking pressure is independent of the brake-pedal setting means that new value-added functions can be implemented in the software. The improvements in safety, handling, and vehicle dynamics can be experienced directly by the driver. We have already realized a range of such value-added functions, and more will follow in order to meet the growing demands for comfort and safety. An individual combination of functions enables vehicles to be given certain characteristic qualities.

We are also developing individual solutions in cooperation with vehicle manufacturers. Which of the ESP® systems is actually used for a particular vehicle depends upon the complexity of the functions, and upon the type and frequency of the control interventions.

Value-added functions can be divided into six groups which are explained in more detail below:
  • Brake and Boost Assist
  • Special Stability Support
  • Standstill and Speed Control
  • Surround Sensing Support
  • Special Torque Control
  • Monitoring and Information
