The rain and light sensor "sees" when the windshield has to be cleared
The third generation of the rain sensor continues our systematic approach to greater safety and convenience. The sensor recognizes raindrops and snowflakes on the windshield and automatically activates the wipers at the appropriate speed. Incorporating automatic selection of the three operating speed modes (intermittent, low-, high-speeds) to stepless regulation of the wiper speed using a reversing motor.
The rain sensor reacts to a sudden splash of water in less than 120ms. Dirt on the windshield does adversely affect the rain sensor’s operation. This also helps enhance wiper blade life and prevents premature product wear resulting from blades wiping a dry windshield. With the help of an integrated light sensor, the rain sensor adapts automatically to ambient light conditions.

Additional functions of the rain and light sensor
The integrated light sensor's job is Automatic Light Control ALS. This function can, if desired, be integrated directly into the sensor.
With the help of an integrated air-conditioner sensor, the Bosch rain sensor is in a position to monitor intensity from the the sun. It then adjusts the instrument panel illumination and regulates the air conditioner.
Information on precipitation can be used to automatically close side windows and sunroofs. |

1 LED, 2 Photo diode |
 |
 |
 |
A beam of light from an LED is reflected into the windshield and the photodiode registers the brightness of the reflected beam.
Water on the windshield affects the reflection of the light beam, so that it is only partially reflected. The rain sensor uses this changed light-beam reflection to establish the rain’s intensity, and triggers the windshield wiper module accordingly. |
