Incorrectly judging a traffic situation, an obstacle that appears suddenly “from nowhere,” or an icy patch on the road -- eventually, every driver is confronted with a challenging driving situation. Despite maintaining an appropriate speed, the driver can lose control of the vehicle.
ESP can prevent skidding and subsequent loss of control. This results from instantaneous interventions in brakes, engine management and transmission control.
From the steering angle and wheel speed sensors, ESP® calculates which maneuvers the driver intends to perform.
From the signals of the yaw rate and lateral acceleration sensors, ESP® recognizes that the vehicle is likely to skid off course. In this case, ESP® reacts quickly, selectively applying braking pressures at each wheel as ESP® steers the vehicle into the intended direction. This way, ESP® helps ensure vehicle directional stability. |
