Wolfgang Tiefensee, the German Federal Minister
of Transport:
"This should be fitted in every car on the road"
Leipzig. Recently, Wolfgang Tiefensee, the German
Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs,
called by at the Bosch stand at the AMI trade fair in Leipzig.
Helmut Pfeifle (N/EO) and Gunter Zimmermeyer (C/AG)
introduce him to Bosch fuelsaving technology , and the
minister decided to try out the new „start/stop“ simulator
produced by the Starter Motor and Generators unit for
himself.

Mr. Tiefensee listens as Helmut Pfeifle explains
the „start/stop“ technology to him.
The simulator model is designed for trade fair visitors, to
illustrade the benefits of the new technology. The system
runs in the background, with no change in driver behavior
required and no controls to be operated. But when the car
comes to a stop, the internal combustion engine is auto-
matically switched off, and is reignited only when the driver
wants to move off again. This system on its own can reduce
fuel consumption in city driving conditions by up to eight
precent, with significantly higher savings for longer sponta-
neous reaction was that „this sould be fitted in every car on
the road.“
The first step in this direction has already been taken, since
the technology recently went into production at BMW. The
first variants of the BMW 1-series and 3-series with such a system as standard equipment rolled off the production line
in March 2007. Bosch is supplying the central component –
the special starter designed specially for the purpose
