Predictive Safety Systems PSS – Support for the driver in situations which could lead to an accident

On today's roads, the increasing traffic density leads more
and more often to critical driving situations. Only a fraction of a second determines whether the situation leads to an accident
or not. An analysis performed on the course of accidents has shown that around 60 % of all rear-end collisions, and almost
a third of the head-on collisions, could have been avoided if
the driver had reacted a mere half a second earlier.

Bosch is developing Predictive Safety Systems PSS, a range
of anticipatory safety systems which permit faster reactions to critical situations in front of the vehicle. PSS will contribute to reducing the number of traffic accidents, and to minimising
the danger of injury in the case of accidents which cannot be avoided. The new preventive functions result from the inter-
action between the active safety systems and the radar-sensor technology of the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). The active safety systems concerned are the Antilock Braking System
(ABS), the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) and the
hydraulic brake-assist system (HBA).

Bosch will expand PSS in three steps:

  • Predictive Brake Assist
  • Predictive Collision Warning
  • Predictive Emergency Braking
