Exhaust management

The lambda oxygen sensor and lambda closed-loop control achieve the most effective exhaust-gas purification via the three-way catalytic converter. The latest generation of broad-
band lambda sensors has been in use in series production
since 1998.
With its more rapid operational readiness it offers engine designers the best preconditions:
particularly during the critical warm-up phase, pollutant
emissions can be reduced to an extent where the SULEV
(Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) and EURO V regulations
are met.
With its broad measuring range, the broad-band lambda
sensor is suitable for spark-ignition engines with intake-
manifold injection and direct injection. In diesel engines
it permits a reduction of emissions of up to 20 %.
Additionally, it can determine the full-load smoke limit by determining the maximum amount of fuel which can be
injected at full load without exceeding a certain smoke-
emission value.
